There is a reason I asked Tony Touch to spin my birthday party in 2011 when I first moved from LA to NYC… he’s one of my favorite DJs of all time. This guy not only is a legendary DJ, he truly knows how to throw a party! For the last 5 years, his weekly Tuesday night party at Sutra Lounge, Toca Tuesdays, follows his radio show by the same name on Sirius XM.
Sutra Lounge is on 1st Ave & 1st St in the Lower East Side, and is the quintessential center of the Hip Hop universe in NYC these days. There are a couple of things that make this party so special. First, its a lounge, not a club… so the atmosphere is much more chill. There’s no bottle service and the bouncers will only have you standing outside if its actually packed inside not leave you out there just for show. Its traditionally Hip Hop music on the main floor and a red light basement party with DJ Butta L spinning reggae on the lower level. Next, there is NO DRESS CODE… guys are welcome in jeans, sneakers and shorts. Girls arrive in short skirts with high heels, jeans or yoga pants with sneakers and flip flops… its come as you are. The bartenders are heavy handed, the environment is chill and people actually come to dance. I actually had a friend lose her iPhone there… and it was returned. Its THAT good.
What’s more, the music is phenomenal. You won’t hear top 40 radio songs here… unless it is a throwback you haven’t heard in over a decade. The vibe here is reminiscent of an era when DJs actually knew their job was to move the crowd and get guys laid… Not interrupt songs to yell on the mic repeatedly. At a great party, you want to see the ladies to dance, smile, groove, throw their head back and laugh… you want them to be approachable. Most of these top 40 clubs the air of exclusivity makes it impossible to approach the women unless you’re popping bottles and making it rain… and the women you find there are looking for those guys as a result. You get what you give I suppose… Tony creates an atmosphere where any guy with GAME, not money, can find a girl. You feel GOOD by the time you leave. Its good clean fun…
The ironic thing about Sutra and Toca Tuesdays is despite its low key vibe, this is THE “Industry Party.” Every week different celebrity guest DJs feature and what’s more, DJs in the crowd hop up just to play around and move the crowd. DJ Scratch, Talib Kweli, EricK Sermon, Nicole from Nina Sky, Just Blaze and countless others can be found partying one minute and on the turntables the next.
Its the ultimate house party.
This past Tuesday, Switzerland’s own DJ Mike Steez & DJ Steve Supreme were the guest DJs, but when Tony hit the tables afterwards… something very special happened. DJs Just Blaze and Big Ben hopped in the booth and the 3 DJs went back and forth mixing and scratching. You can tell they are having a great time, you can hear the crowd enjoying every minute of it… and you WANT to be there.
If ever you are in NYC you have to stop by Sutra on a Tuesday night. The party runs until 4am. If you can’t make it, just hop on BReal.TV and join the hostess with the mostess, Soni with an eye, as she shares a view of the party from the DJ booth.
Oh by the way, DJ Scratch from EPMD is spinning next week. Its going to be PACKED… So get their early. Just saying…
